The quality of Gerberas has improved considerably in recent years. Lighting in particular has brought major advantages, including a longer vase life, increased length and diameters, and more intense colours. Brilliant news for florists. Gerberas are available during the winter to bring a reminder of summer into the home.
Checking for bacterial growth
After being harvested, Gerberas are immediately given a preliminary treatment with a bactericide to prevent bacterial growth from blocking the stems. This is regularly checked at the auction, by measuring the number of bacteria per gram of stem.
