Keep Gerbera cool

Store in a cool place
The optimal storage temperature is 4 - 7 degrees Celsius. A low temperature is important, as it prevents continued growth of the flower stems in particular, limits evaporation and combats the growth of mould and bacteria.

Air circulation
Ensure that there is good air circulation in the cold store. This is especially important for mini Gerberas delivered in water. A low temperature prevents infection by Botrytis (mould).

Upside down
Boxes of Gerbera are transported upside down from the grower to the auction. This is done to stop the stems continuing to grow, which would cause them to curve. It is also best to place the boxes upside down during transport and long periods of storage.

Prevent Botrytis
Batches infected by Botrytis can lose their trade or ornamental value in just a few days. Such infections can occur more often in places where flowers overlap. To ensure this doesn't happen, make sure that there is sufficient cooling and air circulation to prevent infection.
